A Kiss on the Forehead

Encountering Heaven in Every Day Life

I’ve only been a stay at home mom for a week. Actually, a day less than a week. But, all the same, I already see a tendency in me I want to avoid.

I’m so busy.

There’s just so much to be done.

Packing (cause we’re moving).

And it never ends.

So this weekend, God sent me a gift. A message, really.

I was on a retreat for Mr. Right’s school, and we had a few times set aside for Devotions. You know, that’s the fancy thing Christians say when they’re talking about spending time alone with Jesus.

So I sprawled out in the sunshine with my Bible, plopped Buddy Bear next to me on a blanket, and started reading.

Buddy Bear, who is just starting to become mobile, rolled, army crawled, and scooted all over me, just trying to get at my Bible. I was mildly irritated, but I didn’t think much of it. I just picked him up and moved him to the side several times so I could “get something done” in my devotions. I finished and got on with my day.

When we got home from our weekend, I popped online and saw someone had posted a picture of me on Facebook. When I opened it, this is what I saw.

As soon as I saw it, my eyes got all misty. And God whispered….

The picture is a complete picture of everything that’s important about my life right now… About my new job as a stay at home mom.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6 ESV)

God’s given me a great gift in the opportunity to stay at home with Buddy Bear. Really a great gift in being a mom overall. And I can rush through each day worrying about everything that needs to be done and staying busy and keeping a pretty house. Or I can…

I can take time to pray for him.

I can take time to play with him.

I can take time to teach him truth. (it’s never too early.)

I can take time to enjoy him.

How gracious of my loving God to use a moment in which I truly was caught up in my own agenda and still give me the gift of this picture… A visual reminder of what is really important in this new season of life. You better believe I’ve printed it and will be placing it on my bathroom counter as a reminder of what each day should be about.

What is God doing in your life? When has He used something simple (like He used this photograph for me) to teach you something so profound?

Stay tuned… I’m in the midst of writing an entry with a message so dear to my heart, it’s taking me awhile to get all the words together! For now, I’ve got some cuddling to do. 🙂
